Cancer Research UK Free Wills Service Raises Record-Breaking Amount in Scotland

As a Free Wills Service Partner with Cancer Research UK, we are delighted to announce that 2019 was a huge success for the Free Wills Scheme, with over four times as much donated by clients in their Wills than in 2018. Last year saw almost £3 million pledged by clients using the service – breaking records in both Scotland and Northern Ireland.

What’s behind this success?

Our partners at Cancer Research UK (CRUK) explained that last year’s achievements are thanks to more involvement in and awareness of the Free Wills Service. There was an increase in partners across Scotland and Northern Ireland and greater marketing of the scheme by firms, resulting in better coverage in these regions for clients interested in using the service.

Here at Claphams Solicitors, we are proud to support and participate in the Free Wills Scheme, which provides a vital contribution to the pioneering work carried out by CRUK.

How does the Free Wills Service help CRUK?

The Free Wills Scheme and general gifts left in Wills account for a third of CRUK’s total income and research into curing cancer. For every £1 gifted, 80p is given to science and the remaining 20p is reinvested for the future. These legacy gifts have helped to fund many scientists, doctors and nurses to undertake important research and initiatives in Scotland. You can find out more about CRUK’s work in Scotland and how legacy gifts are used to support these projects in the CRUK Research in Scotland guide.

CRUK’s Free Will Service

The Free Wills Service allows you to write or update a simple Will at no cost. The majority of people who use this service leave a gift in their Will to Cancer Research, however you are under no obligation to do so. If you do decide to leave a gift, you can tailor it to your wishes, for example by stipulating the type of cancer your money will support or the specific research facility you want it to go to. This service gives you peace of mind that your assets will be dealt with as you wish, at the same time as supporting a very worthy cause.
